Professional Brass Tuition
Your path – step by step to success
Discover your sound with clean technique – and a touch of inspiration!
Individual lessons for bass trombone, tenor trombone, euphonium, and tuba – onsite in Mönchengladbach or conveniently online.
I'm Nick Sholl – a trained bass trombonist and experienced teacher!
Passion
I have been teaching trombone and low brass for over 20 years! For me, teaching is just as important as playing myself: passing on knowledge and experiencing the successes of my students is deeply fulfilling — and contributes to the timeless cycle of the wonderful brass tradition.
Tailored Lessons
Every person is unique — together we enter a “problem-solving mode” and develop an individual practice plan to help you enjoy playing the trombone to the fullest.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, an aspiring professional, or a motivated retiree — I have extensive experience with all ages and skill levels. As long as you have the will and dedication, nothing stands in the way of your progress!
I warmly invite you to a consultation lesson. Let’s get started together!

WORK FLOW
Step 1: Trial Lesson with Consultation:
We meet for at least 60 minutes. I assess your playing and give you tips for improvement. Usually, you’ll experience some quick wins during this lesson. Suitable exercises are selected and tried out.
I open a Google Document for you and note the key points. The link remains accessible to both of us.
Step 2: Follow-up Lessons / Trial Month:
If you’re satisfied or convinced by my teaching, we meet again to deepen the new impulses and set long-term goals.
This should ideally happen within 4–6 weeks. We discuss which model we want to continue with.
Step 3: Set and Review Long-Term Goals:
If you continue regularly, you’ll get a beneficial mix of repetition and inspiration.
I share my large library of sheet music and exercises with you, tailored to your needs.
Often, I create new exercises that specifically address your current challenges.
CONTENT OF THE LESSONS:
The lessons usually follow this structure:
Breathing exercises, body awareness, and posture
Scales, harmonic series, and articulation exercises: proven methods to improve technique, range, and knowledge
Melodies: A core part of my concept is playing melodies by heart, as long as it resonates with the student. I aim to strengthen the connection between your subconscious and the instrument. This brings a lot of joy and allows automatic progress in a playful way.
DUETS: My large collection of duets offers a joyful way to expand your musicianship and ensemble playing.
"Your tips are very good, and your approach is very inspiring."

FAQ's
Q: Why should I sign up for a continuous subscription?
A: A close and long-term relationship between teacher and student has always been a proven formula for sustainable learning success. Especially for those looking to build a solid foundation or start completely from scratch, the subscription is the recommended option. It enables regular, continuous lessons and ensures steady progress.
With this outlook, I can design a targeted, personalized plan for you – including carefully selected exercises (often tailored to your needs), études, solos, and duets.
Q: Why does the subscription only include 10 sessions per year?
A: Experience shows that there are phases in which scheduling becomes more intense for both students and teachers (July is a good example). A subscription with 10 sessions per year provides flexibility on both sides, allowing for better planning of learning phases as well as breaks for rest and recovery.
Q: Can I benefit from just a single lesson with you?
A: Absolutely – especially if you're committed to practicing the suggested ideas soon after the lesson. This makes the session even more effective and leads to fast progress.
Q: Are my prices fair?
A: I consciously set my prices in relation to the market value and the quality of my teaching. Very few colleagues have international experience in both classical and jazz styles – including time spent in London, Canada, and the Netherlands. You benefit directly from this world-class, versatile expertise.
At the same time, I strive to keep affordable options available to make lessons accessible for people with limited financial resources.

Topic: "Using Vowel Sounds Correctly"
In this video, I show how one of my tuba students achieved small successes using vowel sounds or syllables.

Topic: "Intuitive Playing by Ear"
In this video, I share one of my greatest success stories: a trumpet player who responded very well to my intuitive method and, at a young age, already showed tremendous ability in playing by ear.

Topic: "Expanding Range with Melodies"
Here’s a powerful example of using melodies as a foundation for range development:
This beautiful fragment is transposed through all keys — embedding the sound deeply into the subconscious, which helps the player access new keys and notes more intuitively.
